Patchy the Rat

Patchy is a "double rex" rat. This type of rat loses and regrows hair into random patterns, so that they are sometimes also called "patchwork" rats. She is an intact female who is estimated to be around a year of age.

Pre-Surrender History

Patchy's history is quite convoluted.

She was initially rescued from a local rat breeder that her rescuer referred to as "a veritable rat mill", with all rats living in 10 gallon aquariums. She was saved with her sister, who died only days after being taken away, despite vet care and nursing. Patchy was in similarly bad condition, and after much nursing made a quick recovery. Further vet care showed eye problems (most likely from entropion), and mild occlusion issues. ACR&S was contacted to courtesy list Patchy and her new friend, Ori.

Patchy was rehomed with Ori by her rescuer to a home which appeared to have carefully researched rats and wanted them both. A few months later, they appeared on Craigslist, and were recognized by Jenn, where they were picked up by ACR&S since Patchy clearly had special medical needs. Upon arrival, Patchy was as thin as a rail (though Ori was overweight).

Medical History

2008

December 19 - Patchy was rushed to Small Animal Emergency Clinic on Vick Road, after being found sprawled in a hammock, gasping for breath so violently that she appeared to be convulsing. The emergency vet opined that Patchy had either a severe cardiac problem or some sort of tumor which was now pressing into various organs and causing distress. Patchy could not be stabilized with oxygen, and the vet recommended euthanasia in light of her other health problems.
