Isidore is an intact, male blue and white hooded rat. He is extremely aggressive, possibly due to fear.

Isidore is best known for his extreme hatred of salads. Though the other rats eat their salads with some pleasure, Isidore painstakingly takes each individual salad leaf and shoves it outside the cage bars.

Pre-Surrender History

Isidore was offered for adoption at the Catawba County Humane Society as "Rita", a 4 year old female rat. He was picked up by Jenn in late April of 2008. He was officially "adopted" to live out his life as a sanctuary animal because of his advanced age and gender. Izzy came living in a 20 gallon aquarium which was denoted to "leak badly", and was being fed alfalfa based guinea pig food.

When Jenn arrived home with "Rita", she quickly noticed that he was, in fact, quite male.

Medical History

Isidore arrived to ACRS in 2008 with several medical problems. Besides being male, his tail was covered in what were initially assumed to be warts and old scars, but which were quickly recognized to be festering bite wounds, possibly from a cagemate that was not surrendered.

Within 2-3 days in his new home, Isidore managed to break his right hind leg. Upon examination and x-ray, it was revealed the the break was severe, and that the bones had splintered. Dr. Munn attributed this to malnutrition and age. At this time, we do not know how the leg was broken. At the time the injury revealed itself, Isidore was living in a small, one level "guinea pig" type cage for quarantine with one small hammock allowing for a 4-5 inch jump to the floor.

Partner

Isidore lived by himself during his stay with ACRS. It was intended that he be neutered and integrated into Phedre and Cecilie's cage.

Death

Isidore was euthanized on May 13, 2008. X-rays of his leg revealed it to be badly broken, and left amputation as the only treatment. Because of his extreme aggression (possibly due to fear), he was not deemed a good candidate for surgery. Of primary concern was medication and examination of the surgical site after removal. At the recommendation of Dr. Munn, he was euthanized after x-rays.
