Flax
From ACRSWiki
Flax was a small (3-4lb) neutered male rabbit, pale agouti tan in color similar to a wild cottontail, although definitely of domestic European rabbit stock. He was thought to be of an type or breed that is raised in the south for training rabbit hunting dogs.
Flax was a very amiable rabbit, very willing to be held and petted, displaying almost no aggression towards humans or other rabbits.

Pre-Surrender History
Flax was born on September 16, 1999. This date is known because he was seen by the same vet, Dr Meyers of Roxboro Animal Hospital. for his entire life prior to surrender, and she was called to his owner's house on the day after Hurricane Floyd to inspect Flax's mother, who had just given birth.
Dr Meyers diligently instructed Flax's owners in responsible rabbit care, but he had a very hard life prior to surrender. He was initially kept in an outdoor wire hutch, and had severe scarring on his nose due to the wire or due to being attacked through it. Later, he and the many other rabbits he lived with were allowed to run loose in a yard with several dogs. The owners once commented that they supposed the rabbits kept disappearing by getting under the fence and heading into the woods.
Dr Meyers was able to get Flax neutered and provide veterinary care, but his general level of care continued to be pretty abominable. Flax was surrendered to Dr Meyers in September 2005, when his owners got divorced and neither the husband nor wife wanted him. Dr Meyers asked ACR&S to take him in with the provision that she would always provide free vet care to him as long as he lived.
Medical History
2005
When Flax was first surrendered, his diet was atrocious, consisting of the cheapest corn and pellet mix with no hay or veggies. As a result he was suffering from malnutrition and his coat was very rough and wiry. It took over a year of good diet to get his coat back into normal condition.
Flax was already neutered at the time of surrender.
2006
In early 2006, we noticed that Flax had a hardening and thickening of the prepuce. Even an examination at Avian & Exotic Animal Hospital could find no cause. Dr Johnson described it as a calcification of the tissues of the prepuce, but Flax was in no apparent distress and Dr Johnson was of the opinion that it would cause no additional problems.
Partner
Due to his amiable nature, Flax was paired with a large number of rescue rabbits at various times:
2005: Karma 2005-May 2006: Max November 2006 - December 2006: Bun (aka Penelope) September 2007 - present: Noelle
Foster History
2006
Flax was fostered by Jhondra during most of 2006.
In late 2006, he was fostered with intent to adopt by a couple in Cary. He got along well with their bunny, Bun, but the owners then decided that they didn't have time for any rabbits and surrendered both.
Adoption History
Apart from the brief adoption in late 2006, Flax has never been adopted.
Death
Flax was found dead in his cage on the morning of December 27, 2007. All indications are that he died peacefully.
